Main purpose of job:

The successful candidate will work as part of the Immigration Enforcement International (IEI) team at the British High Commission Pretoria.

IEI form part of the Immigration Enforcement arm of the Home Office within Immigration Intelligence and the Pretoria team is responsible for 27 countries across Southern, Eastern and Central Africa. We work with UK and international law enforcement partners to tackle immigration crime, primarily through preventing the travel of inadequately documented passengers to the UK; enhancing visa decision quality; identifying and tackling underlying criminality and providing intelligence about threats to the UK border. We disrupt organised crime groups involved in immigration crime with a renewed focus on bringing to justice those who exploit the vulnerable, for example cases of modern slavery and human trafficking.

The successful candidate will be required to undertake some regional travel as part of their role.

They will need to be proactive as they’ll be required to assess intelligence and conduct research but they will also need to be reactive as they will be expected to deal with live enquiries.

The role requires effective decision making. The ability to analyse complex data and make recommendations based on the conclusions is important.

Roles and responsibilities:

Airline and host authority liaison

  • Working with airline staff to ensure high quality referrals and ensure non genuine passengers are prevented from travelling to the UK.
  • Training airline staff
  • Building strong working relationships with host authorities at the airport to encourage more collaborative working
  • Taking responsibility for the duty phone alongside colleagues. This will involve taking out of hours calls from airlines to offer advice on the admissibility of passengers to the UK

Capacity Building

  • Assist with delivery of capacity bulding projects
  • Maintain relationships with host authorities and other key stakeholders

Handling intelligence and official data

  • Receiving, grading and disseminating intelligence, circulating suspect alerts, contributing to monthly reports, and preparing monthly statistical returns.
  • Conducting checks against government systems; using information to inform decision making.

Development, research and support of immigration crime investigations

  • Recommending packages for operational research and investigation.
  • Contributing to the development of investigations into the disruption of immigration crime.
Essential qualifications, skills and experience

  • A working knowledge of Microsoft Office, especially Excel
  • Use of an evidence based approach to gather information from a wide range of sources and viewpoints, analysis and evaluation and reaching sound conclusions in order to propose constructive solutions.
  • Effective and confident communication skills
  • The ability to prioritise work effectively under pressure.
