Bursary Overview
The Western Cape Mobility Department runs this 12-month full-time study bursary. It leads to a Further Education and Training Certificate in Road Traffic Law Enforcement. Training starts on June 8, 2026, at the Gene Louw Traffic College in Brackenfell. You will receive a monthly stipend of R5,000 during the program.
Training Locations After Completion
Once you finish training, the department may place you at one of these traffic centres: Worcester, Laingsburg, Beaufort West, Oudtshoorn, Brackenfell, Somerset West, Vredendal, Vredenburg, Caledon, Swellendam, Mossel Bay, George, or Knysna. These spots are across the Western Cape, so you could work near home or in a new area.
Minimum Requirements
To apply, you need a Grade 12 certificate. A valid Code B driver’s licence for manual vehicles is required. You must be physically fit, have no criminal record, and be under 35 years old. No visible tattoos or body piercings are allowed, except ear piercings for females.
Additional Selection Steps
Shortlisted applicants will provide a medical certificate. You will go through medical checks, psychological tests, drug tests, fitness tests, a driving assessment, a written test, and an interview. These steps ensure you are ready for the demands of the job.
Key Responsibilities as a Traffic Officer
After training, you will enforce road traffic laws and promote safety. You will handle traffic control, prevent crime, and complete admin tasks. Expect to work shifts, including nights and weekends if needed.
Skills and Qualities Needed
Good communication in at least two official languages helps a lot. Strong people skills, the ability to stay calm under pressure, confidence, and teamwork are key. You should also work well on your own when required.

This is a training bursary, not a job guarantee. The R5,000 stipend covers basics, but no housing or food is provided. For permanent roles later, you apply separately.
