RESPONSIBILITIES:
The successful candidate’s responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
- Communication:
- Communication with the Lab Administrator, and the Senior Lab Administrator, with regard to the tasks that need to be completed;
- Communication with the students and lecturers in the lab at any given time with regard to the solving of the various problems that they may experience;
- Communication with the student assistants on duty to ensure the smooth running of the lab environment;
- Facilities management:
- Identify requirements for the laboratories, and make sure that the labs are being prepared for, and utilized by the classes scheduled for that tasks;
- Daily checks on the computers, tidiness of labs, and that everything needed are available;
- Monitor and maintain TuksPrint, and the relevant printers within the computer laboratory environment;
- Assist with the physical security in the labs;
- Incident management:
- Daily client liaison, and assist with any general inquiries or refer it to the designated person;
- Managing of daily inquiries in terms of lab availability, and assist clients with basic first line support;
- Provide on-going hardware and software troubleshooting service for users to manage day-to-day operating problems;
- Computer based testing:
- Assist in the solving of technical problems that might arise during computer based testing;
- Assist in general test administration;
- Teamwork:
- Backup behaviour: Involves assisting the performance of other team members. This implies that members understand other members’ tasks;
- Communication: Involves the exchange of information between two or more team members in the prescribed manner;
- Coordination: Refers to team members’ executing their activities in a timely and integrated manner. It implies that the performance of some team members influences the performance of other team members;
- Feedback: Involves the giving, seeking, and receiving of information among members;
- Monitoring: Observing the activities and performance of other team members;
- Team leadership: Involves providing direction, structure and support for other team members;
- Team orientation: Attitudes that team members have toward one another and the team task. It reflects acceptance of team norms, level of group cohesiveness, and importance of team membership.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- Grade 12 certificate, WITH
- Two years’ hands on experience as a Computer Laboratory Assistant, working in an educational computing facility supporting the academic goals of the institution;
- Experience needs to include:
- Basic client support;
- Basic hardware and software support;
OR
- A relevant two or three year tertiary qualification with IT/ computer related subjects, and knowledge of the Tertiary Educational environment;
- Certifications in relevant IT courses may be considered in place of IT subjects;
- (A+/ N+/ Windows certifications/ network certifications/ programming certifications/ Novell certifications); WITH
- One year hands on experience as a Computer Laboratory assistant working in an educational computing facility, supporting the academic goals of the institution;
- Experience needs to include:
- Basic client support;
- Basic hardware and software support.
REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):
- Knowledge:
- Microsoft active directory;
- Linux;
- Technical competencies:
- Hardware and software support and maintenance;
- Behavioural competencies:
- Effective supervisory skills;
- Ability to liaise with clients and resolve conflict;
- Basic client support.
ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:
- A three year’s degree in IT or IT Education;
- Relevant certifications in IT courses;
- Two years’ hands on experience as a Computer Laboratory Assistant, working in an educational computing facility supporting the academic goals of the institution;
- Experience needs to include:
- Basic client support;
- Practical experience in computer hardware and software maintenance;
- Experience in computer-based training;
- Ability to monitor and assist in the running of the CBT system with focus on keeping the integrity of the system and the University.

The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent’s level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED and UMVUZO medical aid schemes and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
