Are you an unemployed seafarer looking for hands-on experience in maritime safety? The SAMSA Work Integrated Learning (WIL) Programme 2026 offers a great chance to gain practical skills. This 24-month program partners with the Department of Transport South Africa and focuses on small vessel operations.

About the SAMSA WIL Programme 2026

The Maritime Training Programme provides real-world training in vessel inspection and safety. You will work with experienced mentors on tasks like compliance checks and surveying. It takes place mainly in Port Elizabeth (Gqeberha), Eastern Cape, but includes placements in other coastal areas. The program helps build skills for a career in maritime safety.

Programme Duration and Stipend

This is a fixed-term training contract that lasts 24 months. Participants receive a monthly stipend of R10 000 during the program. Keep in mind that it does not lead to a permanent job after completion.

Placement Locations

You could be placed at one of these sites based on needs:

  • Richards Bay
  • Durban
  • East London
  • Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth)
  • Mossel Bay

These spots allow work in ports and coastal areas.

Key Responsibilities

In the program, you will help with daily tasks such as:

  • Inspecting and surveying small vessels
  • Joining training and skill-building sessions
  • Checking compliance with safety rules
  • Taking part in safety awareness events
  • Writing reports on inspections
  • Assisting mentors with operations

These duties give you direct exposure to the field.

Minimum Requirements

To qualify, you need to meet these standards:

  • A Certificate of Proficiency (COP), Diploma in Maritime Studies, or similar qualification
  • A BSc in Nautical Science is a plus
  • Be an unemployed seafarer with maritime training
  • Age between 18 and 35
  • Pass maritime medical fitness tests
  • Know basic safety regulations
  • Have strong communication and report-writing skills
  • Be ready to work in ports, inland, or coastal settings

Important Information

Only shortlisted candidates get contact. If you hear nothing within one month of the May 6, 2026 closing date, your application did not succeed. Late submissions are not accepted. The process may include psychometric tests, and it follows employment equity rules.
