John Thompson is offering a great chance for young South Africans to start a career in boilermaking and welding. The John Thompson Apprenticeships 2026 program targets unemployed youth in the Western Cape. Applications close on 15 May 2026, so now is the time to prepare.

About the Apprenticeship Programme

John Thompson, part of ACTOM (Pty) Ltd, makes industrial and utility boilers in South Africa. This program provides hands-on training to become a skilled artisan in boilermaking and welding. Up to 20 positions are available at their Bellville office in the Western Cape.

Successful applicants get structured training and real workplace experience. No prior experience is needed, as full training comes with the job. The location is Bellville, Western Cape, South Africa only.

Minimum Qualifications

You need one of these to apply:

  • Grade 12 Technical with Metal Work, Welder’s Theory, Technical Mathematics (not Maths Literacy), and Technical Science.
  • Grade 12 Academic with Mathematics (not Maths Literacy) and Physical Science.
  • N2 Trade Theory Subjects like Platers Theory or Welder’s Theory, Engineering Science, and Platers Drawing.
  • NCV Level 4 Fabrication (no Maths Literacy).

These qualifications show you have the basic knowledge for the trade.

Additional Requirements

Applicants must meet these standards:

  • Be medically fit for boilermaking and welding.
  • Show interest in engineering.
  • Be aged 18 to 35 years.
  • Live in the Western Cape.

No experience is required. The company will train you from the start.

Selection Process

Candidates go through these steps:

  • Psychometric testing.
  • A 3-month evaluation as unskilled workers.
  • Interviews at the Bellville office.

Only those who pass the evaluation move to the apprenticeship. Note that qualified artisans or people with Electrical, Diesel, or Fitting & Turning qualifications will not be considered.

Required Documents

Prepare these for your application:

  • A cover letter stating the position you want (Boilermaking & Welding Apprenticeship).
  • An updated CV, no more than 4 pages.
  • Certified copies of your academic results and certificates.

Applications without certificates will be rejected.
