About the AIReKEMA Research Fellowship

The Advancing Indigenous and Refugee Knowledge and Engagement on Migration in Africa (AIReKEMA) project is a collaborative effort involving Carleton University and regional hubs. Its core mission is to integrate traditional knowledge systems and community-driven solutions into migration management strategies. The fellowship is designed to empower twelve Research Fellows each year to conduct original research that can directly influence regional organizations and policymakers. Fellows are expected to develop and test new approaches to reduce conflict and build cooperation within border communities.

Fellowship Details and Support

This is a 12-month, part-time fellowship that provides substantial support for research activities. Each selected Research Fellow will receive a stipend of US$11,000 for the duration of the program. Additionally, fellows will have access to US$1,800 to cover eligible research expenses. Academic guidance will be provided through co-supervision from a Carleton University faculty member and a representative from the relevant regional project hub. Fellows will also be able to participate in project events and utilize Carleton University Library resources remotely. A key requirement is completing research ethics clearance from both Carleton University and their home institution or country.

Selection Timeline and Process

A Selection Committee, comprising representatives from Carleton University and the regional hubs, will review all applications. Shortlisted candidates will be contacted for a Zoom interview by June 8, 2026. The final decisions regarding fellowship offers will be communicated to applicants by June 22, 2026.
