AI and Media Literacy: A Powerful Partnership for Southern Africa
Artificial intelligence (AI) is changing how we get and understand information. This makes media and information literacy (MIL) more important than ever. In Southern Africa, a new program called the AI x Media Literacy Dialogue Fund is helping organizations tackle these changes. This fund offers money, training, and support for projects that explore the connection between MIL and AI.
The AI x Media Literacy Dialogue Fund is a chance for groups in Southern Africa to create and run new projects. These projects will look at how AI affects what we see and read, how we think critically, and how we connect with others online. By joining this program, organizations can learn how to help their communities use digital tools more safely and wisely. The deadline to apply is June 15, 2026.
About the AI x Media Literacy Dialogue Fund
This program supports organizations that want to help people understand AI’s impact on media. As AI becomes more common, it influences our ideas about ourselves, our relationships, and our emotions. MIL skills are key to helping people, especially young people, use technology in a smart and responsible way. DW Akademie, a group focused on international media development, is leading this effort. They aim to promote free speech, access to good information, and helpful conversations.
What Kinds of Projects Can Get Funding?
The fund is looking for creative and educational ideas that focus on communities. Projects could include:
Educational Campaigns and Materials
This could involve making short videos, posters, or simple graphics that explain complex topics related to AI and media. These materials would be designed to be easy to understand and share. They aim to raise awareness about how AI works and its effects on daily life.
Youth-Focused Educational Activities
The fund supports workshops, training sessions, or programs for schools. These activities would teach young people about AI and MIL. The goal is to build critical thinking skills so they can better understand the information they encounter online.
Interactive Content
Projects might include games, clickable explainers, or digital stories. These formats make learning about AI and MIL more engaging. They allow users to explore topics at their own pace and in a fun way.
Educational Research and Dialogue
Organizations can also propose projects that study how AI affects communities. These projects would explore how MIL can help address any challenges that arise. They encourage discussion and sharing of ideas about AI’s role in society.
The fund especially encourages projects that use local languages. They also welcome ideas that promote trustworthy information and community well-being.
How the Program Works
The Dialogue Fund has a clear process to help organizations succeed.
Application Phase
First, organizations submit their project ideas through an online form. A panel then reviews these ideas and selects the most promising ones.
Masterclass (Virtual)
Selected teams will attend a virtual Masterclass in the first week of July. This session will feature experts discussing MIL, AI literacy, and digital well-being. Participants will learn how AI shapes identity, relationships, and emotional health. They will also explore the MIL skills needed for healthy online interactions.
Idea Lab (Virtual Workshop)
In the second week of July, teams will join a virtual workshop called the Idea Lab. Here, they will share their ideas with other organizations. They will use design thinking to improve their project plans. This collaborative session helps refine ideas based on feedback and teamwork.
Implementation Phase
From July 15 to October 15, 2026, selected organizations will put their projects into action. They will receive up to 2,000 Euros in funding. They will also get ongoing coaching and technical help. A dedicated contact person will provide feedback and support throughout this period.
Feedback, Exchange, and Showcase
Participants will become part of a regional network of MIL innovators. They will present their finished projects during Global MIL Week, which runs from October 24 to 30, 2026. This showcase allows them to share their work and learn from others.
What is the Masterclass?
The Masterclass is a special online session led by experts. It covers Media and Information Literacy, AI literacy, and how AI affects our digital lives. It also looks at digital well-being and mental health. The session is interactive and helps teams make their project ideas stronger.
What is the Idea Lab?
The Idea Lab is a virtual workshop where teams share their project ideas. They get feedback from other participants and experts. They use design methods to improve their plans. This helps make sure projects meet the needs of the people they are meant for.
Financial Support
Organizations chosen for the fund can receive up to 2,000 Euros. This money can be used for creating prototypes, producing materials, research, or other project costs. The first part of the funding is given after signing an agreement. The rest is provided after the final report is submitted.
What Applicants Need
To be considered, applicants must show they are committed to the project. At least two team members need to attend the Masterclass and the Idea Lab. They should have a clear idea for a MIL and AI project that is relevant to their community. Applicants must also promise to use media and information ethically. Access to a smartphone or laptop is needed for virtual sessions.
Application Requirements
Applicants must be at least 21 years old and live in Namibia, Malawi, Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Eswatini, South Africa, or Lesotho. They need to be supported by their organization. Applications must be sent in before June 15, 2026.
