Who Can Apply?

To be eligible for the Capitec External Bursary, applicants must meet specific criteria. This opportunity is open to South African citizens who are either currently in Grade 12 and planning to study full-time in 2027, or who have completed Matric in 2025 and are taking a gap year. Applicants must be registered or intend to register for full-time studies at a tertiary institution accredited by the DHET or CHE. The bursary is intended for students pursuing an NQF Level 7 or higher qualification, such as a Bachelor’s Degree or Honours qualification.

Academic Requirements

Applicants who are currently in Grade 12 must have achieved a Bachelor’s Pass with a minimum average of 65% or above in their final year. For students already in tertiary education, a minimum academic average of 65% or above is required for the latest completed academic years, including results from 2025 and 2026. These academic benchmarks ensure that bursary support is directed towards students who have demonstrated a strong commitment to their studies.

Who Cannot Apply?

This bursary programme is not open to students pursuing qualifications at certain levels or attending specific types of institutions. It does not cover studies towards N4, N5, N6, Higher Certificates, Diplomas, Advanced Diplomas, Master’s Degrees, or Doctoral Degrees. Furthermore, students enrolled at TVET Colleges, Community Colleges, Graduate Schools, Business Schools, or distance-learning institutions like UNISA are not eligible for this particular bursary.

Preference Criteria

Capitec may give preference to applicants who align with the company’s transformation and employment equity goals. Additionally, priority may be given to candidates who are on track to complete their qualifications within the standard timeframe and are not studying on an N+1 basis or higher. This ensures that the bursary supports students who are progressing efficiently through their academic programmes.

Bursary Renewal Conditions

The Capitec External Bursary is renewable on an annual basis. However, renewal is contingent upon maintaining satisfactory academic performance, active student engagement, and the availability of sponsor budgets. It is important for applicants to understand that receiving the bursary in the first year does not guarantee funding for the entire duration of their studies.

Work-Back Obligation

A key component of this bursary is the work-back obligation. Successful recipients are required to work for Capitec for a period equivalent to the number of years they received funding. Failure to complete this work-back commitment may result in the recipient being required to refund the full value of the bursary benefits received, along with interest at the prime rate.

Disclosure Requirements

Honesty and accuracy are paramount for all applicants and bursary recipients. Applicants and recipients must provide truthful information throughout the application process and during their time as bursary holders. If it is discovered that an applicant or recipient is not studying full-time or has undisclosed paid employment, their bursary contract or offer may be terminated. In such cases, they may be required to refund all bursary benefits that have been paid out. This also applies to any false statements made during interviews or after the bursary has been awarded.

Selection Process

The selection process for the Capitec External Bursary may involve several stages, depending on the applicant’s stage of study. Candidates might be required to undergo screening, shortlisting, interviews, and psychometric assessments. It is essential for applicants to ensure that all information provided in their application is accurate and complete to support their candidacy.
