Probation Period

The first six months of the apprenticeship serve as a probation period. During this time, both AFGRI and the apprentice have the opportunity to assess suitability for a long-term career in the role. This allows for a mutual understanding and ensures that both parties are committed to the program. Either AFGRI or the apprentice can decide to withdraw from the program during this initial phase.

Formal Training Components

The formal training aspect of the apprenticeship is designed to provide a well-rounded education. This includes:

  • Practical Training Institute Attendance: Apprentices will attend formal training at accredited practical training institutes. This provides a structured learning environment for technical skills.
  • Distance Learning: To supplement the practical training, apprentices will engage in distance learning through accredited colleges. This allows for theoretical knowledge to be gained at their own pace.
  • Product Training: AFGRI specialists and equipment suppliers will provide specific product training. This ensures apprentices are up-to-date with the latest technologies and machinery.

Academic Qualifications

  • Grade 12 / Matric: A Grade 12 certificate or its equivalent is mandatory.
  • Mathematics or Technical Mathematics: Proficiency in either Mathematics or Technical Mathematics is required.
  • Mathematical Literacy: Please note that Mathematical Literacy is not accepted for this program.

Other Essential Requirements

  • Valid Driver’s Licence: A valid driver’s licence is necessary, as you may need to travel or operate vehicles.
  • Communication Skills: Good verbal and written communication skills are important for interacting with colleagues and customers.
  • Administrative Skills: Basic administrative skills will be helpful for managing paperwork and records.

Advantageous Subjects

While not mandatory, having studied subjects like Physical Science, Engineering Science, Engineering Graphics & Design, Diesel Trade Theory, or Motor Trade Theory can be beneficial. These subjects provide a strong foundation for mechanical training.
