These 18-month roles in the Western Cape offer a salary of R120,000 per year and focus on biodiversity skills.
Program Overview
CapeNature runs these internships through its Biodiversity Capabilities division. They aim to build skills in areas like ecological management, conservation science, and GIS technology. Positions are based in Stellenbosch and Cape Town. The application deadline is 22 April 2026.
Available Positions
Two main internship spots are open for 2026.
Graduate Intern: Ecological Technician (Freshwater)
This role is at Jonkershoek Nature Reserve in Stellenbosch. Duties include checking compliance with the National Water Act, auditing Water Use Licenses, and helping with license applications. Interns will also turn ecological data into databases, support freshwater monitoring, do fieldwork, and write reports.
To qualify, applicants need a BSc Honours or MSc in fields like Freshwater Ecology, Aquatic Science, Conservation Biology, or Environmental Science. Knowledge of the National Water Act and SASS5 biomonitoring is key. Experience with wetland assessments helps.
Graduate Intern: GIS Technologist
Located in the Cape Town office, this position involves collecting and checking GIS data, aiding real-time mapping for fire management, and building GIS databases from raw data. Interns will also help with reports, mapping, and spatial analysis.
Requirements include a degree at NQF Level 7 or higher in Geomatics, Environmental Management, Conservation Science, or related biological fields. Familiarity with ArcGIS, QGIS, cartography, and GPS is essential.
General Requirements
All applicants must be South African citizens and recent graduates unemployed for up to two years. A clean criminal record and a valid Code EB08 driver’s license are needed. Candidates should be ready for remote fieldwork. Strong organization, analysis, attention to detail, problem-solving, communication, and teamwork skills are required.
